The J2 visa is a non – immigrant visa that allows
the dependants (spouses and unmarried children under
21) of J-1 visa holders to enter the United States.
As a J2 visa holder one may remain in the US as long
as the J1 visa holder remains in legal status. A J2
visa holder may change his or her status in the US.
Further, a J2 visa holder may engage in full or part
time study or undertake employment either part time
or full time on arrival in the US. To work in the US,
s/he must obtain permission from the United States Citizenship
and Immigration Services (USCIS). Once approval is granted,
the J2 holder will receive Employment Authorization
Document (EAD) card, which entitles the spouse to work
in the US. Also, J2 visa holders may travel in and out
of the USA whenever required.
